Google — deprecation, deception, and incompetence with the product transition to Google Drive.

Continuing with the drama of pushy software notifications and secretive installs from Google, today I was notified by my 'Google Backup & Sync' software that it no longer works and I must use the new 'Google Drive for Desktop' software. Recall this is the one which they sneakily installed on my computer without my consent several times — I've uninstalled it more than twice now and it keeps coming back. In their desperation to not lose any customers Google thinks this behavior is okay... That's capitalism for you.

You might chalk this up as the product team failing to consider that a user may not want the software, and so they just setup the software to periodically check for the installation and install it on the users PC without really thinking to add in some sort of registry flag that the user uninstalled the software already (or they could simply ask the user if they want to install the software in the first place... hello!). At best this a case of incompetence and harmful negligence.

I still don't understand the transition to the new software. Everything about the new Google drive app is worse. They give you a little comparison of the new vs. old software and try to frame it as if there are a few benefits of the new software, but they are actually lies. Yes, outright lies.

  • Row 1: The old software does not allow you to "stream files" because it syncs the files themselves — you don't need to stream at all. That's why this is a lie: it is a stated as an advantage for 'Drive for Desktop' but it is not an advantage — they both functionally do the same thing, and in fact the need to 'stream' files may arguably be worse for certain use cases.
Bottom line: Drive for Desktop is at best equal to Backup & Sync, possibly worse depending on how the streaming works.
  • Row 2: It's not clear what "when streaming My Drive" means to me yet since I am still waiting for the software to set itself up because it seems to be syncing everything in my drive to my PC, even though I don't want that:

So the bottom line for row 2 is that the new software is the same or worse.

  • Row 3: 'Backup to Google Photos only' is listed as an advantage for the new software, but again this seems like another lie. Why does this matter to most people? The whole point of using these tools is to backup and sync files from the cloud. Backing up photos from my Drive to Google photos isn't even something I would want necessarily, especially if the process alters the file itself (i.e. adds compression). However you slice it, it is a stretch that this is an "advantage" for the newer software because it is secondary to the primary function of the tool. Bottom line: new software is no better.
  • Rows 4-6: These rows explicitly highlight how the new software is worse than the previous one. Not further comment needed there!

So you see, there are no actual benefits from Google Drive for Desktop. The software is worse in several ways. Why the switch, Google? Was this just cleaning up an org within the company so you can reallocate resources better?

*sigh* Typical Google, always deprecating, rarely innovating. It's sad when you live in a world where a company that rakes in billions of dollars each year can't even manage to use their money effectively to make the world a better place. What I could do with even just a tiny fraction of their yearly revenue...
